Fluffy Green Widget

Fluffy Green Widget
Some time ago, we created a short video named “The Fluffy Green Widget”. It was about one minute long and really was not about anything in particular. We just rotated some nice pictures and inserted a computer generated voice overlay.
The important thing was naming the video “Fluffy Green Widget” and submitting it to all the major video sites like YouTube.com, Kewego.com, Livevideo.com and about 15 others.
In addition we submitted a short post to several established blogs that included the YouTube video and several other sites social networking sites.
All in all, there were about 25-30 submissions. Each one had a link to this page with “Fluffy Green Widget” in it, or the actual URL of this page in the link text.
Now, if you go to Google and search for “fluffy green widget” you will see this page listed on the first page of Google along with several other pages that are hosting our Fluffy Green Widget video and article.
The Point of this experiment…
As you know, the search term “fluffy green widget” is not a highly targeted search term. This is why we picked it. Just to make the point that the process works. The point is it will work for any key word to some extent. The important thing is to choose a key word that does get search volume, but does not have too much competition.
You can easily find a key work like this just by going to Google and searching for your targeted key words. Right above the search results, Google will tell you how many pages are targeting your key word next to the “Results”. In our case it looks like this:
Results 1 – 10 of about 66,200 for fluffy green widget.
66,000 competing pages may sound like a lot, but in the scheme of things it is not. In fact, if your key word has results in Google of lest than 250,000, then it is a good key word to target. Try several variations of your key words along with other qualifying words to find one with results under 250k.
What are “qualifiers”…
In our case “fluffy” is a qualifier. In a real case scenario, lets say you are selling an exercise video. If you search Google for that phrase you get about 65 million competing pages. It would take quite a long time to rank on the first page of Google for that term.
On the other hand, competing pages for “step aerobics dvds” is just over 100,000 pages. A much easier target to get listed on the first page of Google.
To help you find these great key words, search Google, click on the “Other Options” link at the top left of the page, then click on the “Wonder Wheel” link. This is a great tool.
What you should do next…
Find your targeted key word in Google, then on your web site, create a page with that key word in name of the page. The title tag on this page should also be your key word, then submit this page through our service… and watch the targeted traffic come your way.
